Rio’s Olympics are already the most model-filled sporting event of all time—thank you, Gisele. But when it comes time to turn on the television or set the DVR, what are Brazil’s models tuning in for? Whether they’re cheering on athletes competing in their country’s quintessentially beloved pastimes like soccer and volleyball, or checking out events making their Olympic debut this year (footvolley, anyone?), these model–sports fans are keeping a close eye on the Games. Here, the competitions they’re most looking forward to and the international athletes they’re rooting for.
The event she can’t wait to see: “I love basketball due to my son, who played in the state championship. And I also watched an NBA game last year and got addicted to it! Another favorite is beach volleyball, because of my husband. He played it in the past, and his cousin is an Olympic champion. The whole family cheered and sang the national anthem when he won— it was all very emotional!”
The event he can’t wait to see: “I am looking forward to watching all sorts of cycling: mountain bike, BMX, and road. I’m a competitive cyclist myself and can appreciate man’s efforts to conquer earth’s terrain.”
The event he can’t wait to see: “Soccer. . .it’s Brazil’s passion. It’s in the blood of every Brazilian, whether rich or poor, white or black. There’s no denying Brazil’s love of the game!”
The event she can’t wait to see: “I love volleyball, because as you might know, we’re very good at it here in Brazil. I also love gymnastics—it is beautiful to see how close to perfection they can get with such accurate movements.
I want to see if we Brazilians will finally get the gold medal in football, and also if Usain Bolt is going to enter history with a third gold medal in a row! I am fully supporting Yane Marques, a modern pentathlete, who also comes from Recife, my hometown. She held the Brazilian flag at the opening ceremonies.”
The event he can’t wait to see: “The answer is footvolley, which is a hybrid of soccer and volleyball. I’m playing it right now at the beach. I recommend everyone give it a try!”
Emanuela De Paula
The event she can’t wait for: “I’m a big fan of sports—both watching and playing them. I love the World Cup, but my favorite is definitely the Olympics, and since this year the Games are in Brazil, I can’t be more proud!
In terms of watching, I love soccer of course—it’s Brazil’s number-one sport after all. I love volleyball and handball as well, because I used to play back in school and was actually pretty good at handball. Swimming, both lane competitions and synchronized events, is a beautiful sport to behold, even though I can’t swim properly myself!
In the past three years, boxing has become my passion, so I will definitely be watching that event. I started doing it myself at Aerospace NYC and fell in love. We even started a boxing training camp in Tulum, Mexico, two years ago and hope to continue it for years to come.”
The event he can’t wait to see: “Weightlifting! I have a personal connection to that sports category, as I’m looking forward to seeing my friend Fernando Reis compete for Brazil. I’m sure he will do amazing!”
The event she can’t wait to see: “Soccer/football is my favorite sport by far. I was born watching people play it, so I’m really passionate. I even went to the World Cup to watch Brazil play. If I go to watch something at the Olympics, soccer will be it for sure!”
