Getting the most out of a festival may seem like a cakewalk, but there is a subtle art to experiencing everything the event has to offer: from avoiding the pitfalls of festival dressing clichés—leave those flower crowns at home, we beg of you!—to navigating the various musical acts in style. And so who better to guide you through the process than models Fernanda Ly, Dilone, Heather Kemesky, and Imaan Hammam, who all took in the Governors Ball Music Festival on Randall’s Island together, and managed to enjoy every minute. In between seeing sets from The Strokes, Beck, and Of Monsters and Men, the crew had plenty to say about perfecting the experience. Rule one: Don’t forget the spontaneity. “It was a spur-of-the-moment decision to go,” said Ly, Tthere was no plan for the day, and I was with some of my favorite people. There wasn’t any stress of working and we just did whatever we wished.”
Rule two: Though some festivals have turned into networking events, and places to see and be seen, the girls stressed that music should always be the primary focus. “Compared to Coachella, Gov. Ball is definitely focused more on the music, and the artists, which I always appreciate,” said Kemesky. “At Gov. Ball [I was excited to see] The Strokes! But I also loved Of Monsters and Men; they were amazing.” Rule three: Given that you’re there to rock out, clothing should be functional, not just cute. “It’s a festival, so you’re going to be on your feet all day,” says Hammam. “The weather can change, so I like to layer and wear cool sneakers or boots—I think being comfortable is the most important thing.” Rule four: Once you’ve got your wardrobe set and you’re ready to experience the music, what matters most is who you choose to share the time with. “[The best parts were] my dancing ladies,” says Dilone. “I mean, the more the merrier at festivals!” Spending the day together and documenting every moment in an exclusive video for Vogue.com, you can see for yourself how the gang enjoyed their festival time—from invading the DJ booths to dancing the night away beneath the strobe lights.
